Class 11 Physics Introduction to Scalar/ Dot product of vectors

INTRODUCTION TO DOT PRODUCTS | CLASS 11 PHYSICS CBSE JEE NEET ISC

This video is an introduction to dot product between two vector quantities. This introduction is intended to be useful for class 11 students of CBSE and ICSE and JEE. This introduction is given by Zeta Educare, best Physics tutor in kolkata.

Dot Product of Two Vectors

Dot Product The dot product is one way of multiplying two or more vectors. The resultant of the dot product of vectors is a scalar quantity. Thus, the dot product is also known as a scalar product. Algebraically, it is the sum of the products of the corresponding entries of two sequences of numbers. Geometrically, it is the product of the Euclidean magnitude of two vectors and the cosine of the angle between them. The dot product of vectors finds various applications in geometry, mechanics, engineering, and astronomy. Let us discuss the dot product in detail in the upcoming sections.

Scalar product

  • The scalar product or dot product of any two vectors A and B, denoted as A.B (Read dot B) is defined as   , where q is the angle between the two vectors.
  • A, B and cos θ are scalars, the dot product of A and B is a scalar quantity. Both vectors, A and B, have a direction but their scalar product does not have a direction.
  • B is the product of the magnitude of A and the component of B along A. Alternatively, it is the product of the magnitude of B and the component of A along B.

  • B = B.A , i.e. Scalar product is commutative.
  • (B + C) = A.B + A.C , i.e. Scalar product is distributive.
  • Further, λ A. (λ B) = λ (A.B) where λ is a real number.
